One Tick Bite and Steak Becomes Poison: The Allergy That Is Turning Meat-Eaters Into Vegetarians
A reel by the American fitness personality Jillian Michaels warns of a tick bite that can turn a steak dinner into a night of hives. For people who already keep a vegetarian kitchen, the allergy loses most of its triggers, though not all of them.
UNITED STATES — A Facebook reel by the fitness trainer and broadcaster Jillian Michaels is circulating with a warning about alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy to a sugar found in the meat of most mammals, which in the United States is spread mainly by the bite of the lone star tick.[1][2] Facebook’s share preview showed about 222,000 views; when Akincana Gocara viewed the reel on 29 October 2026 it had about 2,300 reactions, 226 comments and 299 shares.[1]
What the reel says
The reel’s caption asks viewers to imagine “sitting in a crucial meeting when your body suddenly erupts in hives and panic”, blames “a secret ingredient hiding in almost every animal-based product on the shelf”, and links to the full episode of her programme Keeping It Real.[1] That episode, published on YouTube on 15 July 2026 under the title “Is the Lone Star Tick a Bioweapon? The Truth About Alpha Gal Syndrome”, pairs Jillian Michaels with the physician Gabrielle Lyon.[3]
The allergy
Alpha-gal is a sugar molecule present in most mammals but not in humans. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls the resulting syndrome “a serious, potentially life-threatening allergy and tickborne disease”, estimates that as many as 450,000 people in the United States may be affected, and counts more than 110,000 suspected cases between 2010 and 2022.[2]
In the episode, Jillian Michaels explains that a tick bite can train the immune system to treat alpha-gal as a threat. The reaction to a meal of beef, pork, lamb or venison then comes three to six hours later, as the fat is digested, which is why, she says, so many people “wake up in the middle of the night, and they’re covered in hives, or they’re struggling to breathe, and they have no idea that it was dinner that was the cause.”[3]
Dr Lyon, whose clinic treats the condition, describes what it can do to a working day:
“If you don’t know you have it, there is no predictability, and that becomes very difficult for people. Can you imagine sitting in a boardroom meeting and then all of a sudden, I don’t know, you have to go to the bathroom or you’ve broken out in hives.”

She adds that red meat is not the only trigger: “Puddings have it. Gelatin is a big source of it”, along with lard, pork casings and, for some patients, dairy foods such as ice cream. Her first treatment, she says, is to remove the exposure, as in an elimination diet.[3] The CDC lists red meat (“beef, pork, lamb, venison, or rabbit”), dairy products for people who cannot tolerate them, and some medicines and non-food products as possible triggers.[2]
A diet that already avoids most of it
For an alpha-gal patient, the advice amounts to giving up the meat of mammals and the foods made from it. Followers of Krishna consciousness gave these up long before the allergy had a name. ISKCON’s initiated members vow not to eat meat, fish or eggs, and Srila Prabhupada based the rule on Krishna’s own request in the Bhagavad-gita for “a leaf, a flower, fruit or water”:
“Thus meat, fish and eggs should not be offered to Kṛṣṇa. If He desired such things as offerings, He would have said so. Instead He clearly requests that a leaf, fruit, flowers and water be given to Him, and He says of this offering, ‘I will accept it.’”
