GBC Orders Every ISKCON Guru to Stop Initiating Until Gaura Purnima 2027
The Governing Body Commission has resolved that no ISKCON guru may give first, second or sannyasa initiation from 1 December 2026 until Gaura Purnima 2027, a date it says “could be extended”. Before resuming, every guru must sign a notarized Oath of Allegiance and file their 2026 financial reports. The GBC says ISKCON has never undertaken a “sufficiently comprehensive study” of guru-tattva since Srila Prabhupada’s departure.
The ISKCON Governing Body Commission (GBC) has ordered a worldwide halt to all initiations in the Society. In a statement released through ISKCON News on 26 October 2026, the GBC published the full text of resolutions passed at its 2026 Mid-Term General Meeting, held at Govardhan Eco Village in the week of 19 October, including a “Moratorium on All ISKCON Initiations” from 1 December 2026 until Gaura Purnima, 22 March 2027.[1][2] The GBC presents the pause as a measure to protect Srila Prabhupada’s position as Founder-Acarya and to give its Guru Services Committee time to clarify the role of gurus and disciples in ISKCON.[1] The resolutions make no mention of a decision on Vaishnavi diksa-gurus, the question that had dominated the meeting’s first days, but they set up a formal “Dialogue” on siksa, diksa and Vaishnavi diksa-gurus for December 2026 and January 2027.[1][3]
What the moratorium says
The operative clause of the resolution reads:[1]
“All initiations by ISKCON diksa gurus shall be put on hold from December 1, 2026, until Gaura Purnima 2027. (This date could be extended.) No ISKCON guru shall initiate new disciples, or offer second initiation to existing disciples, or offer sannyasa initiation during this time. Additionally, no new initiating gurus shall take up or complete the authorization process during that time.”
GBC resolution “Moratorium on All ISKCON Initiations”, Mid-Term General Meeting 2026, published 26 October 2026[1]
In practice, from 1 December:
- no first (harinama) initiations;
- no second (brahmana) initiations for existing disciples;
- no sannyasa initiations;
- no new diksa-gurus may start or finish the GBC’s authorization process;
- the only exception is a “qualified aspiring disciple who may pass away before Gaura Purnima 2027 (in the opinion of medical experts)”, and then only with the approval of the Guru Services Committee.[1]
Initiations already scheduled for November 2026, including the Kartik season in Vrindavan and Mayapur, are not affected by the resolution as written.[1] The GBC did not say what happens to candidates whose initiations were planned for December onward.
What gurus must do before they can initiate again
The resolution attaches two conditions to every ISKCON diksa-guru, not only to those seeking authorization. Before they may restart initiating, “all ISKCON gurus will be required to”:[1]
- “Sign a notarized ISKCON Oath of Allegiance, as presented by Srila Prabhupada”, and
- “Submit the required annual financial reports for the previous year (2026).”
The statement does not reproduce the text of the oath or say which document “as presented by Srila Prabhupada” is meant, nor what happens to a guru who declines to sign or does not file the reports.[1]
Why the GBC says it is doing this
The resolution’s preamble lists ten reasons. The GBC says that as ISKCON marks its 60th anniversary, “many older ISKCON gurus are passing away and many younger gurus are taking up responsibility for large numbers of disciples”, and that “many new disciples in ISKCON misunderstand the service role of their guru in ISKCON in relationship with Srila Prabhupada and the ISKCON managerial line of authority”, as set out in the GBC paper “Harmonizing Lines of Authority”.[1]
Two clauses go further than previous GBC statements on the subject. One acknowledges an imbalance between the two kinds of guru:[1]
“Whereas, in practice, a significant difference can be currently observed in the worship, recognition, and treatment accorded to siksa-gurus and diksa-gurus within ISKCON;”
GBC resolution “Moratorium on All ISKCON Initiations”[1]
The other concedes that the Society has never properly studied the matter:[1]
“Whereas, since the departure of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, the Society has not undertaken a sufficiently comprehensive study and explanation of Guru-tattva, particularly the standards, principles and practices of initiation as related to an unprecedented growing global ISKCON society;”
GBC resolution “Moratorium on All ISKCON Initiations”[1]
The GBC also calls it “urgently important to take concrete steps to ensure that Srila Prabhupada’s position in ISKCON as our Founder-Acarya and pre-eminent siska guru for all ISKCON members is not minimized in any way”.[1]
Two studies due by the 2027 annual meeting
The moratorium is tied to two companion resolutions, both assigning work to the GBC’s Guru Services Committee (GSC) with a deadline of the Annual General Meeting in early 2027.[1]
The first directs the GSC to “research and highlight Srila Prabhupada’s writings and instructions, existing GBC authorized papers and statements, and relevant ISKCON laws” in order to clarify three points for ISKCON members: the role of an ISKCON guru in relation to ISKCON and its managerial line of authority; “the proper mood of a disciple towards their initiating guru and other ISKCON authorities”; and that gurus “may not have the expertise to guide disciples in matters of marriage, employment, child rearing, investment of funds, and other areas of life”. The preamble notes that “some disciples of ISKCON gurus need to better understand their relationship with ISKCON, Srila Prabhupada and ISKCON’s managerial line of authority”. The GSC is to consult the Regional Governing Bodies, the India Bureau and the India Continental Committee (ICC) on “how misunderstandings in these areas have manifested in their regions”.[1]
The second directs the GSC to produce “a comprehensive report and statement” on the comparative roles of, and relationship between, diksa and siksa gurus, after consulting the regional bodies, the India Bureau, the ICC, the Sastric Advisory Council and other scholars those bodies put forward. It is to be presented to the GBC for ratification at the 2027 AGM. The GBC says there has been “a call for additional clarity of these roles by devotees around the world”.[1]
A “Dialogue” on siksa, diksa and Vaishnavi diksa-gurus
A fourth resolution, headed “Terms of Reference Working Committee”, is the only place in the statement where Vaishnavi diksa-gurus are named. It resolves “that a structured Dialogue be convened to enable a meaningful and productive discussion on the relationship of siksa and diksa, including Vaishnavi Diksha Guru, all within the principle of Guru Tattva”.[1]
A working committee made up of the GBC Executive Committee and one or two representatives each of the India Bureau, the ICC and “concerned” Regional Governing Bodies is to set the terms of reference for that Dialogue by 15 November 2026, subject to GBC approval. The Dialogue itself is to “commence and conclude between the months of December 2026 and January 2027”, that is, inside the moratorium period.[1] The two GSC studies are described as intended “to complement and support the work pursued under the Terms of Reference Working Committee”.[1]
Background: the Mid-Term General Meeting
The GBC met at Govardhan Eco Village near Wada, Maharashtra, from about 19 to 23 October 2026. ISKCON News reported that the second and third days were given over to “an intensive discussion of Vaishnavi diksha gurus”, and that GBC Chairman Madhusevita Dasa said the discussion had “expanded beyond the specific question of Vaishnavi diksha gurus to broader theological and institutional considerations about the spiritual master’s position in ISKCON”, including “the guru’s role, function, and ontological status”. The agenda was changed to allow more time, and he described the third day as “intense and meaningful”.[3]
On the final day, according to GBC communications director Parijata Devi Dasi, members “continued discussions on the position of Srila Prabhupada and gurus within ISKCON” while approving an Environmental Ministry and an artificial-intelligence study committee.[4] Neither daily report mentioned a moratorium on initiations.[3][4]
During the meeting, two senior disciples of Srila Prabhupada, Bhakti Raghava Swami and Bhakti Vikasa Swami, appealed to GBC members not to force a decision on female diksa-gurus, and scholars of the ISKCON India Scholars Board said the India delegation had been given half an hour to present its case. Akincana Gocara reported both.[5][6]
Where things stand
Key dates set by the resolutions:
- 15 November 2026: terms of reference for the Dialogue due;
- 1 December 2026: moratorium on all initiations begins;
- December 2026 to January 2027: the Dialogue on siksa, diksa and Vaishnavi diksa-gurus;
- Early 2027 (GBC AGM): Guru Services Committee reports due;
- 22 March 2027 (Gaura Purnima): moratorium ends, unless extended.[1]
