Female Diksa Gurus

Not AI: In 2023, Bhakti Vikasa Swami Said ISKCON Was Heading for a Split

A Facebook reel asks whether a clip of Bhakti Vikasa Swami and Basu Ghosh Das on female diksa gurus was made with AI. Most of it comes from a real conversation published on Bhakti Vikasa Swami’s own channel in January 2023. Its opening line does not.

FACEBOOK — A 38-second reel shared by the account Bhagavandas Acbsp, with about 17,000 views, carries the names of Basu Ghosh Das and Bhakti Vikasa Swami and the question of female diksa gurus, under the caption “Can anyone confirm if this madness is AI generated?”[1] Bhakti Vikasa Swami’s words in it are genuine, and nearly three years old: they come from a conversation recorded on 13 January 2023 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, and published on his YouTube channel four days later.[2] The reel’s first line, however, does not appear anywhere in that recording.

What the reel shows

The reel opens on a close-up of a speaker at a lecture, with the subtitles “So really the highest authority for followers of ISKCON is Vedic literature, not Prabhupada.” It then cuts to a split screen labelled “HG Basu Ghosh Dasa (ACBSP)” and “HH Bhakti Vikasa Swami (ACBSP)”, under the title “The Female Diksa Guru Issue — Yet Again”, with these subtitles:[1]

“But I would suggest that why don’t we just accept that we are heading for a schism and just split the whole society as amicably as possible… It’s heading for that… This FDG thing, female diksha guru, it’s just a manifestation of the ISKCON leadership’s ongoing war against Srila Prabhupada’s clearly stated instructions.”

Subtitles of the reel [1]

The account’s caption answers the clip angrily. It asks whether “these individuals have an issue with women being their equals or accepting knowledge or correction from them”, calls them “jackals and coyotes”, and closes with Manu-smriti 3.56, on the gods rejoicing where women are honoured.[1]

What was actually said in 2023

The full conversation runs to about 32 minutes. The reel joins two remarks made some 15 minutes apart, and both come from Bhakti Vikasa Swami, not from Basu Ghosh Das.[2] The first follows his comparison with Christian churches that split over the ordination of women:

“I’m just saying that the practical effect is that we’re heading for a schism and I would suggest, who will listen to me, unlikely anyone’s listening to me, but I would suggest that why don’t we just accept that we’re heading for a schism and just split the whole society as amicably as possible. It’s heading for that. That’s the reality.”

Bhakti Vikasa Swami, 13 January 2023 (from YouTube’s automatic transcript) [2]

The second comes at the end of an argument about varnasrama, not about diksa as such. He says the GBC ran years of strategic planning with “not a single mention of varnashram”, despite what he calls Prabhupada’s repeated order to establish it, and that the FDG question is a manifestation of that.[2]

The reel leaves out the qualification he makes straight after the schism remark: “we can’t say there can’t be any under any circumstances because historically there have been, but not many, as Srila Prabhupada said.” It also leaves out his scriptural case. He points to Prabhupada’s purport on Suniti (SB 4.12.32), where she could not be Dhruva’s diksa-guru “according to Vedic injunction”, and argues that the other side treats the question as one of preaching need, not of sastra. He adds that it is wrong to say the West needs this for preaching, citing disciples of his in Atlanta.[2]

The line that could not be traced

“The highest authority for followers of ISKCON is Vedic literature, not Prabhupada” is not in the transcript of the 2023 conversation.[2] The close-up comes from a different recording, with a different setting and a logo in the corner. Akincana Gocara could not find the source, the date or the words around the line.

How commenters answered

The reel had drawn 211 comments when this report was prepared; the ones read for this article were the first shown. Niscala Devi Dasi answered “Prabhupada’s clearly stated instructions” by quoting “I want that all my spiritual sons and daughters initiate disciples all over the world”. Shyam Das wrote that Bhakti Vikasa Swami “has a point, although he does put it bluntly”.[1] Neither Bhakti Vikasa Swami nor Basu Ghosh Das appeared in those comments.

Where things stand

The debate is sharper now than in 2023. A group of ISKCON gurus has asked the GBC not to force a decision on female diksa gurus, and the GBC has announced a Dialogue on the subject for December 2026 and January 2027, alongside a moratorium on all initiations from 1 December.[3][4]
