The Ritvik Debate Is a Smoke Screen: the Real Fight Is About Property

Two temple presidents and a former fundraiser who served at the Bangalore temple in the 1980s and 1990s say Madhu Pandit Dasa once scolded devotees for listening to ritvik arguments, and that they never heard of the Karnataka society that won him the temple until he went to court. His supporters tell the story the other way round.

BENGALURU, India — In a 30-minute conversation published on 28 October 2026 by the YouTube channel ISKCON Bangalore Reality, three devotees who were part of ISKCON Bangalore in the years Madhu Pandit Dasa led it argue that the ritvik doctrine now promoted by the temple’s leadership is “a smoke screen” for a dispute over property.[1] ISKCON Bangalore, which won the Hare Krishna Hill temple in the Supreme Court in May 2025 as a society independent of ISKCON Mumbai, says the opposite: its supporters present the conflict as one over obedience to Srila Prabhupada’s letter of 9 July 1977, not over money.[2][3][4]

Who is speaking

The channel, which earlier released former fundraiser Varada Krsna Dasa’s interview “Why I Left ISKCON Bangalore”, presents its guests as devotees “closely connected with both ISKCON Bangalore as well as ISKCON India”:[1][5]

  • Narahari Chaitanya Prabhu, temple president of the ISKCON Cultural Centre, South Bangalore;
  • Anukul Keshav Prabhu, temple president of ISKCON Sheshadripuram;
  • Vibhav Krishna Prabhu, described as a donor and fundraiser.

The host is Achyuta Arjunasakha Das. The video’s description says the conversation “presents the participants’ personal recollections, experiences and interpretations” and that the issues raised “should be considered alongside other perspectives and relevant evidence”.[1]

“He was very angry with me”

One of the speakers says he first heard the ritvik argument in 1988, on a business trip to Singapore, from a devotee named Sundar Gopal Das, who showed him the 9 July 1977 letter and told him that ISKCON’s initiating gurus “are not gurus, they are ritviks”. He was already committed to his spiritual master, Jayapataka Swami, he says, and the next day he took the question to his temple president, Madhu Pandit Dasa.[1]

“At that time he was very angry with me, that why I should hear from somebody whom I don’t know… He says these are all people against our guru-parampara system. So it is very offensive to be hearing and associating with them.”

Another speaker, who says he was initiated by Jayapataka Swami at Mayapur in March 1989, recalls that Madhu Pandit Dasa was strict about the worship of the initiating guru: “If we by chance miss guru puja, he would chastise us. Even if you miss Prabhupada puja, he would not say anything.”[1]

A change of stance after 1997

The speakers place the change after the Hare Krishna Hill temple opened in 1997. One says that the temple management and the GBC “had some difference of opinion”, that the temple president “was not in a very comfortable position”, and that congregational preachers were “slowly shown the door from preaching areas”.[1] He recalls a meeting of about 25 congregation leaders called by the temple leadership, at which they were taught that the 9 July letter was bona fide and that Srila Prabhupada never wanted the guru system to continue after him.[1]

“Because July 9th letter we had already known about it, so there’s nothing new which they were trying to give us.”

The host states that 80 to 90 per cent of the temple’s original full-time devotees have since left to serve in ISKCON India; the figure is his, and the video does not document it.[1]

“We never heard of ISKCON Karnataka”

The fundraiser among the guests says that he enrolled life members and raised money for the temple’s construction in the name of ISKCON India, promising donors free stays and prasadam at ISKCON temples across the country, and that Madhu Pandit Dasa was presented to them “as the branch manager operating under ISKCON India”.[1]

“ISKCON Karnataka, I put it on record, we never heard about ISKCON Karnataka till the year 2000, 2001… It was only brought to our attention when he filed the case.”

Speaker on ISKCON Bangalore Reality, 28 October 2026 [1]

He says the 80G tax-exemption receipts issued to donors were ISKCON India’s, and that the Karnataka society, incorporated in 1978, held no meetings and kept no records for twenty years before it was revived.[1] Another speaker asks why, if the Bangalore leadership is confident of its position, the group’s properties are held in “so many trusts” rather than in the name of ISKCON Bangalore.[1]

These recollections run against the Supreme Court’s judgment of 16 May 2025, which held that ISKCON Bangalore is a society registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960, distinct from ISKCON Mumbai, and that it owns the temple.[2] ISKCON Mumbai’s petitions for a review of that judgment are pending; the bench hearing them is being reconstituted after a judge recused himself on 5 October.[6]

“A smoke screen”

Near the end the host sums up the guests’ view: “the main underlying issue is the property issue and the ritvikism philosophical debate is a smoke screen.” The speakers agree. One says the case in court “is dealing with the property issue. There is not even an iota of doubt on that”, and calls Madhu Pandit Dasa “such an expert at diverting the attention of everyone” by bringing in the ritvik question.[1] Another advises confused devotees to “hear the other side” before judging: Srila Prabhupada, he says, “cannot change the whole stand within one letter.”[1]

The other side

Madhu Pandit Dasa and ISKCON Bangalore did not take part in the conversation. As of 29 October 2026, 08:40 Brasília time, ISKCON Bangalore’s website carried no response to it; its most recent news item is from April 2026.[7]

Madhu Pandit Dasa’s supporters tell the history the other way round. In a video published on 23 October by the Hare Krishna Mandir channel, two devotees of the group said that Madhu Pandit Dasa learned of the 9 July letter in 1999, presented it at Mayapur and was suspended for doing so, and that during the court-ordered mediation he offered to hand over the group’s centres and step down from management if Srila Prabhupada were accepted as the sole diksa-guru in its temples.[3][8] On 24 October the Struggle for Truth channel argued that the GBC’s rejection of that offer shows the dispute was never about money, and that the fraud allegations against Madhu Pandit Dasa had already been rejected by the Supreme Court in 2025.[4]

The 28 October conversation dates Madhu Pandit Dasa’s first encounter with the ritvik argument to 1988, when, by the speaker’s account, he rejected it; the Hare Krishna Mandir video dates his discovery of the letter to 1999.[1][3]
