In a new hour-long discussion, the ISKCON India Scholars Board argues from the Bhagavad-gītā and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam that dīkṣā requires a living spiritual master, answers the ritvik doctrine, and takes up the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration’s objections to ISKCON’s Ratha-yātrā dates.
INDIA — The ISKCON India Scholars Board (IISB) published a new video discussion on 11 October 2026 titled “Why Shastra Demands a Living Guru: Rebutting Ritvik & SJTA Challenges”.[1] In it, Kṛṣṇa Kīrti Dāsa, the board’s convenor, and IISB member Abhinandana Nimāi Dāsa continue their series on śāstra and Sanskrit scholarship, this time arguing that scriptural literacy is what settles two disputes currently facing ISKCON: the ritvik doctrine of initiation and the dates on which ISKCON centres observe the Ratha-yātrā.[1]
According to the IISB’s own summary of the video, the two speakers “explore the indispensable role of śāstra and Sanskrit scholarship in defending authentic dharma.”[1] The summary lists the following lines of argument:[1]
The video runs for one hour and three minutes and was published on the IISB’s YouTube channel.[1]
The new video continues a discussion the same two speakers published on 23 September 2026. In that earlier episode they responded to Suvyakta Narasiṁha Dāsa’s criticism of Sanskrit scholarship, argued that learning the language supports fidelity to the guru’s instructions, and revisited the 28 May 1977 conversation and the 9 July 1977 letter at the centre of the ritvik debate.[2]
The IISB has argued the same position on initiation before. In a 2025 discussion, board members including Basu Ghosh Dāsa, Kṛṣṇa Kīrti Dāsa and Vidvan Gauranga Dāsa maintained that the ritvik system of initiation lacks scriptural basis, that Śrīla Prabhupāda’s use of assistants to conduct initiations during his presence conformed to Pāñcarātrika injunctions, and that among guru, sādhu and śāstra, “the śāstra is the center for all” (Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 20.352).[3]
The Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri objects to ISKCON centres holding Ratha-yātrā on dates other than Āṣāḍha-śukla-dvitīyā, the day stipulated in the Skanda Purāṇa, or dates close to it. On 20 March 2025, IISB members presented research on the question to Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, SJTA chief administrator Dr Arabinda Padhee and SJTA scholars in Bhubaneswar.[4]
The dispute has since escalated. In April 2026 the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee, chaired by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, said ISKCON had held 79 “off-calendar” Ratha-yātrās and 10 Snāna-yātrās, that ISKCON had assured it in October 2025 that it would stop holding off-calendar Snāna-yātrās worldwide and Ratha-yātrās in India, and that legal action “may be our last option.”[5] In July 2026, after ISKCON’s National Communications Office issued a press release defending its scheduling, the SJTA called ISKCON’s claim that its festivals were in accordance with śāstra “absolutely false.”[6]
Separately, ISKCON Bangalore, which is led by Madhu Pandit Dāsa and is not part of the GBC-governed ISKCON, announced in July 2026 that its centres worldwide would observe Ratha-yātrā within the nine-day period prescribed by the Puri temple, in a letter to Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb.[7] The IISB video takes the opposite view, holding that Śrīla Prabhupāda’s adjustments to the festival date for preaching purposes are consistent with higher śāstric principles.[1]
The IISB presents its position as a defence of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s instructions through śāstra and Sanskrit scholarship. The IISB’s website is at iisb.co.in.[1]
