Official Shastri Degree in Gaudiya Darśana to Begin at National Sanskrit University, Tirupati from 2026–27

We are pleased to share an important development for the preservation and academic study of Gaudiya Vaishnava siddhanta. At National Sanskrit University, Tirupati, an official undergraduate Shastri degree program in Gaudiya Darśana is set to begin from the 2026–27 academic year onwards.

This is an officially recognized bachelor-level program in Gaudiya Vedanta under the Darshana faculty, following the CBCS semester system. The course is a 3+1 year program, with the fourth year serving as an honors track. The syllabus describes it as Shastri Sammanita (B.A. Honors) in Gaudiya Vedanta, focused on Pramana, Prameya, and Prakarana texts.

The program objective is to train students in Vedantic thought through the study of pramanas, prameyas, and foundational categories such as jiva, Ishvara, prapancha, bandha, and moksha, while applying these principles through the Sandarbha texts.

This program is a major step forward for Gaudiya Vaishnava education. Students will not only receive a recognized university degree, but will also systematically study the core siddhanta of the Gaudiya tradition through Sanskrit source texts. According to the message shared with us, devotees themselves will teach this course, making this a rare and meaningful bridge between traditional Vaishnava learning and formal higher education.

Program Outcome

  • After completing the 3-year UG program, a student becomes eligible to pursue Acharya (M.A.) in Gaudiya Vedanta.
  • After completing the 4-year UG Honors program, a student becomes eligible to pursue research in Gaudiya Vedanta.

These outcomes are stated directly in the official curriculum.

Year-wise Structure

  • First Year (Semesters I & II): 16 credits
  • Second Year (Semesters III & IV): 16 credits
  • Third Year (Semesters V & VI): 24 credits
  • Fourth Year (Semesters VII & VIII): 29 credits, including practical/project work

The curriculum table also notes that practical marks are not included in the total marks, but passing in practical is mandatory.

  • Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu
  • Vedānta-sūtra Govinda-bhāṣya

Semester-wise Syllabus Overview

Semester I

  • Pramāṇa-paddhati (Pratyakṣa-pariccheda) — study of epistemology, the nature and divisions of pramāṇa, and direct perception
  • Vedānta-syamantaka — especially the five topics of Īśvara, jīva, prakṛti, kāla, and karma
  • Tattva Sandarbha (Pramāṇa-khaṇḍa) — the authority of śabda, the apauruṣeya nature of the Vedas, and the supreme pramāṇa status of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam

Semester II

  • Prameya-ratnāvalī and Tattva Sandarbha (Prameya-khaṇḍa) — Bhagavan as supreme reality, Krishna as Svayam Bhagavan, and the core teachings of Bhagavatam
  • Pramāṇa-paddhati (Anumāna-khaṇḍa) — inference, vyāpti, forms of reasoning, and hetvābhāsas
  • Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā — karma-yoga, jñāna-yoga, aṣṭāṅga-yoga, and bhakti-yoga with commentary

Semester III

  • Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (Pūrva-vibhāga) — śuddha-bhakti, vaidhi-bhakti, rāgānugā-bhakti, bhāva, and prema
  • Gopāla-tāpanī Upaniṣad Bhāṣya — Bhagavan, Gopāla mantra, Vraja, and arcana-related teachings
  • Bhagavat Sandarbha — Bhagavan’s nature, His śaktis, His manifestations, and acintya-bhedābheda

Semester IV

  • Paramātma Sandarbha and Krishna Sandarbha — the distinction between jīva and Paramatma, and Krishna’s position as Svayam Bhagavan
  • Upādhi-khaṇḍanam / Māyāvāda-khaṇḍanam — refutation of false superimposition and impersonalist views
  • Śrī Laghu-Bhāgavatāmṛta (First Part) — the forms and avatāras of Bhagavan and the supremacy of Sri Krishna

Semester V

  • Bhakti Sandarbha — bhakti as the primary abhidheya, the path of sādhana, and the development from vaidhi to rāgānugā and onward toward prema
  • Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam with Sārārtha-darśinī commentary (Part 1) — including Nārada, creation, Kapila’s teachings, and Ajāmila

Semester VI

  • Siddhānta-ratnam — systematic presentation of Gauḍīya Vedānta, the supremacy of bhakti, and refutation of opposing doctrines

Semester VII

  • Viṣṇu-tattva-vinirṇaya — pramāṇya, apauruṣeyatva, and foundational Vedantic issues
  • Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam with Sārārtha-darśinī commentary (Part 2) — Prahlāda, Samudra-manthana, Krishna’s appearance, Navayogendras, and pure bhakti teachings
  • Govinda-bhāṣya on Brahma-sūtra (Part 1) — introductory adhikaraṇas, Brahma-jijñāsā, and scriptural methodology

Semester VIII

  • Govinda-bhāṣya on Brahma-sūtra (Part 2) — further study of the first pāda and the harmonization of scriptural terms in relation to Paramatma
  • Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (Dakṣiṇa- and Paścima-vibhāgas) — bhakti-rasa theory, sthāyī-bhāvas, vibhāvas, anubhāvas, sāttvika-bhāvas, and the principal rasas centered on Sri Krishna

Broader Academic and Traditional Scope

The syllabus also situates the course within the wider Shastra framework of the university, where disciplinary subjects include areas such as Sahitya, Vyakarana, Nyaya, Vedanta, Dvaita Vedanta, Sankhyayoga, Dharmashastra, Puranetihasa, Vedabhashyam, Agama, and Mimamsa.

At the same time, this Gaudiya Vedanta program is clearly centered on the teachings of the Gaudiya sampradaya, especially through the works of Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī, Rūpa Gosvāmī, the Bhāgavatam, the Gītā, and Govinda-bhāṣya.
