Help Bhumi in Her Time of Need

Help Bhumi in Her Time of Need: https://www.gofundme.com/f/bhumi

Dear Friends,

We’re making this appeal on behalf of our dear godsister Bhumi Devi Dasi.  Last year she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and has since undergone several grueling treatments including major surgery and chemotherapy. This has left her with crippling and painful health problems, the most recent being a serious fracture in her spine,

Unable to continue working, Bhumi has gone through her life savings. She has no husband or children, so we, her spiritual family, would like to extend ourselves and help her survive in her remaining time.  As is the case with many devotees who find themselves destitute, it is humiliating to have to ask for help. At this point ISKCON is in the very early stages of creating facility for aging devotees. We hope that by reaching out to the global ISKCON community we can help cover Bhumi’s living expenses and mounting out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Bhumi joined ISKCON in 1972 when she was only 19-years-old and in her first year at university.  After understanding our spiritual nature and the goal of life, she abandoned all attempts at material happiness and committed herself fully to Srila Prabhupada’s mission. For many years Bhumi, along with a legendary army of sankirtana devotees, distributed Srila Prabhupada’s books and collected laxmi in airports, bus terminals, street corners, football games, you name it, wherever she was sent! Because of the efforts of these early book distributors, Srila Prabhupada’s temples in Vrndavana, Mayapur and Bombay were  funded and established.

While staying in different temples, she became interested in  learning the culinary arts and established herself as one of ISKCON’s most sought after cooks. In the 1980s Bhumi served in the UK, at both Soho Street Temple and Bhaktivedanta Manor. Her amazing cooking became renowned.
.
We humbly ask the community of devotees to help support one of the original book distribution pioneers of our movement.  Many of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples gave up their youth, education, and material security in order to dedicate their lives entirely to serving  Srila Prabhupada’s most cherished desire, that his books be distributed all over the world. This would be a good time to show gratitude to one of these original book distributors, many of them nearing the end of their lives.

We don’t know for sure how long Bhumi has left in this world, but we want to ensure that she is able to keep up with her mounting medical expenses and remain in her home, without worry of eviction.

Your support is so much appreciated,
