Puri: Protests have gained momentum in Odisha over the conduct of Rath Yatra by International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Mumbai. Activists of Jagannath Sena on Sunday staged a demonstration in front of Jagannath Temple in Puri and burnt the effigy of Mumbai ISKCON head Radhanath Swami Maharaj.

There is of course the argument that Lord Caitanya’s Sankirtan movement doesn’t care about opposing voices. Even when the smarta brahmanas in Navadvip protested to the magistrate, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, “Don’t care. Go on chanting. Go on chanting.” However, when Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu lived in Jagannatha Puri He did not cause a turmoil in Puri. Lord Caitanya could have told king Prataparudra that Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur should be allowed to enter the temple of Lord Jagannatha but He did not do that. Later they constructed a monastery at that place where Haridas Thakur used to live in humility. But in Puri Lord Caitanya did not create a disturbance by defeating wrong arguments.
“Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu could have personally taken Haridāsa Ṭhākura into the Jagannātha temple if He wished, but the Lord did not like to disturb a popular custom.
