Krishna Janmāsthami!

The appearance of the Supreme Lord Sri Krsna in this material world is not like the birth of ordinary human beings. Ordinary beings are forced to take birth in various situations due to their good or bad past activities. But the Supreme Lord Sri Krsna appears in this world simply out of His own desires.

What are those desires? Lord Krsna states in Bhagavad-gita 4.8:

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ
vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām
dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya
sambhavāmi yuge yuge

“To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium.”

This material world is a part of Lord’s creation, and there is a purpose to it. All conditioned souls are meant to re-establish their lost relationship with the Lord and return back home to the spiritual world. Now, the souls have achieved different degrees of progress towards this goal. Some are openly inimical towards the Lord and His established order – they are called demons, and it is Krsna’s desire to curb them. Then there are innocent people who are inclined to accept and follow the process of religion for elevation – for their benefit Krsna desires to establish the principles of religion to make their elevation easier.

But the most important of Lord’s desires for coming here is to enjoy loving pastimes with His devotees in this world and to attract all conditioned souls to those pastimes. All of Krsna’s pastimes on the Earth are filled with bliss and joy and they can attract the heart of anyone who faithfully hears about them from bonafide devotees. In this way all sincere souls can become devotees of Krsna and enter His eternal pastimes in due course of time. Thus the Lord’s pleasure is increased and the purpose of His appearance fulfilled.

Krishna is absolute. So hearing about his janmāsthami pastimes at once gives his personal association to the speaker of the pastime and all faithful members of the audiences. Even if it for a nimisha, the time it takes to blink, if such pastimes are read or heard it grants access to Krishna bhakti, loving devotional service unto Krishna. And  one moment’s worth of paying an aural reception to His Lordship’s pastimes is an eternal benefit as He Himself declares it in the Bhagavad-Gita 2.40,

nehābhikrama-nāśo ‘sti

pratyavāyo na vidyate

sv-alpam apy asya dharmasya

trāyate mahato bhayāt

“In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.”
